Emily Hayward

don't forget today is the last day so remember to ask any questions and get voting :)

Favourite Thing: I love to try new things, and to be able to exaplain science to others. Its great fun to find out how things work and come up with solutions to problems we have, or things which might be a problem in the future e.r. supply of clean water.

1999 – 2005 Dyce Academy, Aberdeen. 2006 – 2011 University of Aberdeen. 2011 – 2015 University of Bath

Highers (scottish version of A levels), BSc in Chemistry and currently doing a PhD

Work History:

A gas plant for Shell, a bank, a fish and chip shop, a swimming coach.

Current Job:

I’m a PhD student which means I do research at a university.

University of Bath

Me and my work

I research how water can be made clean using tiny little filters called membranes

In my work I try to seperate out food from water – this may sound easy but it becomes a very big challenge when the food sticks to the filter.  We want to remove the food from water becuse it has lots of energy meaning bugs, bacteria and algae can grow…..and we dont want those sort of things to be in rivers or come out of our taps!

My Typical Day

No 2 days are the same. Sometimes I’m in the lab, sometimes I analyse data on the computer and other days I tell people about science.

What I'd do with the money

I would use the money to create a really fun exhibit that people could play with and learn more about science.

My Interview

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

Friendly, creative and fun

Who is your favourite singer or band?

I love music, but I’m not sure I have a favourite….Coldplay are defo one of my favourites.

What's your favourite food?

I love food! probably curry, pizza or cake.

What is the most fun thing you've done?

probably skiing, or flying a plane

What did you want to be after you left school?

A vet, then a doctor, then a scientist

Were you ever in trouble in at school?

Once or twice for talking too much…..

What was your favourite subject at school?

Science and maths

What's the best thing you've done as a scientist?

What or who inspired you to become a scientist?

I guess my chemistry teacher at school – she let us have a lot of fun experimenting in the lab and trying different things out

If you weren't a scientist, what would you be?

Maybe an althete? I love sport!

If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!

Tell us a joke.

What is the chemical formula for the molecules in candy? Carbon-Holmium-Cobalt-Lanthanum-Tellurium or CHoCoLaTe

Other stuff
