      Hi Hattie!

I’m hoping to run a “disaster day” – so you would come to the University and be given instructions that you are to provide relief aid for a certain disaster, like a tsunami.

There are so many things we don’t think about, particularly the supply of clean water. So given a kit of available materials (which say could include sand, a balloon and a bucket with a hole in it) could you supply clean water to somebody who lives a 20 minute walk away?

I’m hoping the day would be the application of many scientific ideas – my degree is actually in chemical engineering but I would still consider myself a scientist as I am trying to apply the science I know to come up with solutions. That’s what I would hope the science competition would bring out in people, using science in practical ways to solve problems!

      Hattie
