At the moment I only work with other scientists and engineers. That’s because my research is focused on materials for cars, and it’s very early research. We’re not planning on building a model any time soon. If it does get to that stage though then yes I would have to work with lots of people from different professions.
First are the car companies that would be putting my materials into their cars. They need to know how it works and we’ll have lots of problems to solve that no-one has thought about before. After that people like accountants and lawyers are all very important if you want to sell a new invention.
Thats a great question, and the answer very much depends on your role as a scientist. Currently I work with scientists and engineers at Bath University, but I also work with a company called Kerry Foods – there I work with people in a variety of jobs who work for that company. I also work a little bit with teachers, and organisers of festivals etc.
In my previous job I was a scientist on a gas plant and there I worked with lots of different types of people, the job was less research based, but more testing things to make sure the chemicals met the right specifications, there I worked with engineers, operations teams, painters, inspectors, the government, environmental agencies etc so there was a lot of variety.
Other scientists will work with farmers and fishermen, people designing new pesticides etc would work with farmers, many scientists work with hospitals developing new cures and wound dressings etc, so it very much depends on your job as a scientist who you work with but there is great variety which is fab as I’d get bored if I only ever worked with scientists, I love to be around a variety of different people.
There are lots of different types of scientists out there, and they all work with people from lots of different professions. Like Jemma said, some scientists work with people from industry like car companies, and lawyers etc.
Where I work, there are lots of scientists that work with fishermen to try and help conserve the fish in our seas. I also know sport scientists that get to work with professional athletes like Mo Farah!
